9 Best places to visit in and around Weligama

Weligama is one of the popular tourist areas in Sri Lanka. Not only it is famous for surfing but it is famous for many locations with breathtaking sceneries and a long history. 
In this article, we had covered some best and most popular places in Weligama that you should visit on your next trip to Weligama.

1. Taprobane Island

Taprobane Island was originally named “Galduwa”. This Taprobane Island is a private island and is about 2 and a half acres. This small Island consists only of one villa. Maurice Talvande built this villa in the early 1920s. He also renamed the name Taprobane which is the Greek word for ‘Sri Lanka”. Present ownership of this Island holds by Geoffrey Dobbs.
Both the villa and the Island hold a great history. It accommodated many kings, queens, presidents, prime ministers, and popular artists.
You will be amazed by the breathtaking scenery of this Island. You can visit the Island and stay in the villa if you like to experience the luxury of a private villa.

2. Kushtarajagala

This Kushtarajagala statue is a part of the Kushtarajagala viharaya.  This statue holds great history and is believed that belongs to the 7th to 9th centuries. Even though the exact reason for the creation of this statue is not clear there are many stories surrounding it.

One of the most popular stories is, that a foreign king who had suffered from leprosy “kushta” had visited Weligama and was cured by a local doctor. Then this king carved his figure as a reminder, But the creditability of this story is argued as it is a self-boasting action and not an action that does to honor the doctor who was treated.

And the other story is that the king was cured by worshiping a god and this statue belongs to that god. Some even state this statue is a bodhisattva figure or a figure of relief of god “Natha”.

To this day people believe that by worshipping this statue many diseases can be cured. Anyhow the history surrounding this statue is worth visiting this statue.

 

3. Handunugoda tea state

This handunugoda tea state is situated in Ahangama. This is the only tea state in Sri Lankan coastal belt. Their flagship product is “virgin white tea” which is made by following an ancient Chinese tea-making ritual. They offer guided tea plantation visits and tea appreciation programs to all visitors for zero cost. At the end of the tour, you can enjoy a warm cup of tea for a very low price. You can also purchase their products from the store/showroom available in the factory.

4. Weligama Bay

Weligama bay area is very popular among tourists because of its calming vibe and long sandy beach. This area is also very good for water sports such as surfing. Also, you can find many well-known resorts, restaurants, and cafes in this area.

5. Ahangama beach

Ahangama beach is a less crowded beach with a nice view. The beach is nice, clean, and calm. So you can spend your relaxing holidays or evenings here without disturbances. This area is also famous for still fishermen who are fishing near the shore. Ahangama area is also famous for surfing. But this area is best for advanced surfers as sometimes the sea can be a little too rough for beginners. Anyway, there are many surf schools around this area. 

6. Midigama beach

Compared to the other beaches around Weligama and Mirissa, Midigama beach is secluded and less chaotic. If you are a person who likes to chill and rest all day this beach is the best place for you. Even though this beach is good for advanced surfers this is not one of the popular surfing areas.  If you wish to stay there are many places to stay here for an affordable budget. You can also find restaurants that serve delicious foods in this area. 

7. Mirissa beach

Mirissa beach is one of the most popular tourist attraction areas on the southern coast. This area is good for surfing, whale watching, and many more activities. This beach is crowded and not much of a quiet place. Anyway, the Mirissa area has so many restaurants, bars, and cafes that serve delicious foods and drinks. You can also try street food stalls. There are both expensive and budget-friendly places to stay, you can choose a place according to your budget.

8. Weligama fish market

The fish market is located in Weligama harbor. If you want to buy fresh fish and other seafood the best place to go is the fish market. The best time to go there is early morning. You can buy seafood items for a very cheap price. 

9. Thelijjivila snake zoo

This snake farm is a shelter for venomous and non–venomous snakes found in the neighborhood. The owner is an Ayurvedic doctor -. The owner and son will demonstrate different snakes who reside on the farm. You can also touch and take a picture with a non-venomous snake-like python. You have to pay an entrance fee to visit there.
