As you already know that traveling to Kandy is a long journey, There are 3 methods to travel to Kandy from Weligama. They are,

1.  By Train
2.  By Bus
3.  By Taxi
4.  By Renting a Car

1. By Train

This is the easiest method to travel to Kandy from Weligama using public transportation. Every day except Sunday there is a train at 1.50 pm at Weligama train station that will directly go to Kandy. (Matara – Kandy Train).

Or, If you want to travel earlier than that time, you can travel to Colombo fort by train from Weligama station and you can switch to another train from Colombo fort train station which goes to Kandy. Or even you can get on a Kandy bus from Colombo bus station. The bus station is not too far from Colombo fort train station. Every weekday trains that go to Colombo are available At 5.10 am, 6.10 am, 6.30 am, 9.35 am, 2.20 pm at Weligama train station. On weekend days 5.10 am train is not available.

Note: If you are planning to travel by train, please go to Weligama station on the day before you are going to travel. To confirm whether the train is available or not on that day.

2. By Bus

There are 3 ways to travel to Kandy from Weligama by bus. They are,

I. By Highway Bus (6 hour journey)

Every day, at 06.15 am and 1.30 pm you can find highway buses at Matara bus station that goes to Kandy. The buses leave daily at 06.15 am and 1.30 pm.

There is no way to go to Kandy by a one bus from Weligama. First, you should go to Matara by a normal bus. You can get on a bus that goes to Matara, from Weligama bus station. If you are unable to find the correct bus, get help from the help center at Weligama bus station. Usually, the buses that go in Matara direction stop at Weligama bus station in front of the “Peoples bank ATM”.

After you reach Matara bus station. Find the highway bus that goes to Kandy. Usually, the highway buses stop at the beachside of Matara bus station. Get help from the help center of the Matara bus station if you are unable to find the bus.

This is the easiest and most comfortable method to travel Kandy from Weligama or Matara by public transportation.

If you are unable to catch the Kandy highway bus. Please use the second method as below.

II. By Highway Bus to Kadawatha, then get on a normal bus from Kadawatha. (7 hour journey)

Go to Matara bus station as said in the first method. Then get on a “Matara to Kadawatha” highway bus. These buses are available hourly or every 40 minutes. Get help from the help center of the Matara bus station if you are unable to find the bus. After you reach the Kadawatha bus station. You must get on a normal bus that goes to Kandy. There will be a bus stop near the Kadawatha bus station where you can get into a bus that goes to Kandy direction. Get help from the Kadawatha bus station help center to find where Kandy buses stop at.

III. By Normal Bus (8 - 9 hours journey)

To travel to Kandy on a normal bus you don’t have to travel to Matara. you can get on a normal bus that goes to Colombo from Weligama bus station. After the bus reaches the Colombo bus station, you can get into a bus that goes to Kandy. Even though this method is very easy it will take a lot of time. Approximately 8,9 hours.

3. By Taxi

To find a taxi to travel to Kandy from Weligama you can ask for help from your hotel or guest house. They will surely help you to find out a taxi. Or you can contact us for help if you are unable to find a taxi.

4. By Renting a Car

If you have rented a vehicle to travel Kandy you can get into the highway from Weligama “kokmaduwa” highway entrance. Then you must exit from the “Kadawatha” highway exit. Then drive on the Normal Road to Kandy direction.
